From the founder

Yes, it comes set up. Here's why I wouldn't make it any other way.

It's the question under almost every video of the Momento. The short answer is yes. The longer answer is the reason the Momento exists.

A hand with rings rests on a dark brown Momento with a star charm on its cord, on a gingham picnic blanket.
Ready to write in the day it arrives.

Under almost every video of the Momento, someone leaves the same comment.

i love this. does the journal come set up?

The comment she answers in the video

I smile every time I read it, because I used to ask that exact question. Usually after I had already paid.

It's a fair thing to wonder. You see a beautiful journal in someone's hands, full of pages and little keepsakes, and you can't tell if that's what shows up at your door or what she spent a month putting together.

So here's the honest answer, and the story behind it.

The cover that showed up empty

A few years before the Momento, I saved up for a journal cover I had wanted for months. It came in a lovely box. I opened it on the kitchen counter and found exactly one thing inside: the cover.

The paper was sold separately, in sizes I had to look up. The pocket for receipts and ticket stubs was another order. By the time the last package came, almost two weeks later, the feeling I'd bought it for was gone.

I never wrote a page in it. It went in a drawer, and I decided I just wasn't a journal person.

I was wrong about that. That cover never gave me a chance.

So I made one rule: it arrives ready

When we started making the Momento, I wrote one rule on a sticky note above my desk. Whoever opens this box should be able to write in it that night.

Not after a second order. Not after a weekend of setup videos. That night.

Everything else came after that rule.

Open it the night it arrives. A few months in, it looks like this.

What's inside when you open the box

Every Momento arrives with two paper inserts already under the elastic. One is lined, for the nights you want to write it all down. One is blank, for lists, sketches and the phone number you scribble while you're on hold.

That's 152 pages between them, on fountain pen friendly paper that lies flat when it's open.

Next to them sits a zipper organizer for the things you'd otherwise lose: a receipt, a ticket stub, the card someone pressed into your hand. And it all ships in a linen travel bag, ready for your purse.

The planner pages in her video are extras, on purpose

In the video, she flips past grid, monthly and weekly planner pages. Those are separate inserts, and I want to be upfront about that.

I kept them out of the box on purpose. Some people plan every hour of the week. Some never will. I'd rather you start with the two inserts everyone uses, then add a planner only if your week asks for one.

Each one comes in Pocket or Classic and slides in next to the others.

When the pages fill up, you don't start over

This is the part I'm proudest of.

With most journals, the last page is the end. It goes on a shelf, and you start again in a new one that doesn't feel like yours yet.

With the Momento, you slide the full insert out from under the elastic, keep it, and slide a fresh one in. Same cover, same charm, same spot in your bag. Refills start at $12.

The cover stays with you. The pages change as your life does.

Then you make it look like you

She pressed her initials into her cover by hand and clipped a little star charm onto the cord. That's my favorite part of every video we get. No two Momentos end up looking alike.

Charms clip right onto the cord, so you can change yours whenever you like. The next page shows you every one.

Pocket or Classic

Hers is the Pocket, 4.25 x 6.89 inches. It rides in a purse every day, which is exactly where it goes at the end of her video.

The Classic is 4.72 x 7.87 inches, with more room on the page for the kitchen table or a long night of writing.

Both arrive set up the same way, in eight colors.

How it works, start to finish

  1. 1
    Open the box

Two inserts, one lined and one blank, are already under the elastic, with the zipper organizer beside them.

  2. 2
    Write the first line

Start in whichever insert you reach for first. There are no printed dates, so a skipped week costs you nothing.

  3. 3
    Refill when it's full

Slide the full insert out, keep it, and slide a fresh one in. Refills start at $12.

Yes. Two 76-page inserts (one lined, one blank) and a zipper organizer insert are already inside, and it ships in a linen travel bag. Open it and start writing.

Are the planner inserts from the video included?

No. The weekly, monthly and grid planners are separate inserts, each in Pocket or Classic, so you only add the ones you'll use.

How do refills work?

Slide the full insert out from under the elastic and slide a new one in. Refills start at $12, about 76 pages each.
